Maintenance

Cars are expensive - whether new or used - so it makes good sense to keep them in the best condition possible. The top way to do this is to take your car into the professionals for regular maintenance services. A little time and money goes a long way when it comes to warding off potential damage and repairs. Washington Toyota has certified technicians with expert knowledge about your Toyota. One service that can truly benefit your vehicle is regular radiator inspections and maintenance services. Here’s what you need to know about this service.

Have you ever burned your finger? Whether on the stove, an iron, or even a hair straightener? The heat from these devices are nothing compared to the extreme heat a car’s engine produces while in use. A radiator is a part of your car’s cooling system. It works alongside a fan, hoses, thermostat, and other parts to keep the engine cool while operating. The radiator’s main duty is to keep the radiator fluid cool as it circulates through the engine. Your car’s engine can only withstand so much heat. Without a radiator, it would burn right up! That’s why the radiator is such an important part of the health and wellness of your car’s cooling system and engine.

Here are some problems that can occur due to an insufficient radiator.

Overheating: If your car has never overheated before, consider yourself lucky. Overheating is one of the worst things that can happen to your car’s engine. If your radiator is not working as it should, it can cause engine temperatures to run higher than they should. When this happens, an overheating engine can occur. If your car overheats, pull over immediately. Continuing to drive a car that’s overheating can lead to serious engine damage.

Leaks: Coolant leaks are fairly common. They occur when a radiator stops working or becomes cracked. If your car lacks the appropriate coolant, your radiator cannot do its job, and may become damaged just like the engine might. If you notice a puddle of greenish-yellow liquid on the ground beneath your car, there’s a good chance you have a coolant leak.

Contamination: If our radiator does not get regular radiator maintenance services it will continue to get dirtier as time goes on. A dirty radiator does not work as well as it should, becoming less efficient over time. This can lead to a contamination of the radiator coolant due to rust and debris that later turns into sludge. Sludge is near impossible to remove entirely from a radiator, which means you are at risk for needing a radiator replacement.

The Plus trim adds nice features for anyone who likes an SUV with more adventurous appeal. It has foglights, roof rails, windshield wiper de-icer, and cargo area privacy cover. The inside of the Highlander provides attractive aesthetic with a straight-forward layout. Gauges and controls are easy to use and visibility is excellent. Due to its smaller stature, it is easy to maneuver compared to other SUV’s in its class.

The Highlander provides car-like handling and ride qualities, along with a powerful, fuel-efficient V6 engine. The Highlander comes with two engine choices. The base model comes with a 2.7-liter inline-four engine with six-speed automatic transmission. It gives 187 horsepower and 186-pound-feet of torque. Standard on the Limited model and optional on the base, Plus, and SE is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 248-pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard for this engine, but there is also an option of all-wheel drive. Highlanders that have the V6 engine can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, making it an excellent vehicle for family vacations.

When it comes to fuel economy, there are things that increase it, while others decrease it. Here’s a list of helpful tips to help improve fuel economy.

Avoid Excessive Idling

Idling your car is easy to do and you probably do it more often than you even realize – at a drive-thru window, in heavy traffic, waiting outside a friend’s house to go to the movies. But every time an engine idles, your car’s fuel economy drops. For every hour a car spends idling, a quarter to a half gallon of fuel is burned - and you haven’t even moved! It only takes 10 seconds worth of fuel to restart a car. Why burn fuel just sitting in place? Save yourself the money and don’t waste your gas - turn off your engine whenever possible!

Buy Fuel Efficient Vehicles

It may sound a bit obvious, but the best way to improve fuel economy is to buy a vehicle that is fuel efficient, like a hybrid, or better yet, an electric car - no gas necessary there!

Remove Extra Weight

You know that stroller (or other heavy object) that’s been taking up space in your trunk for more weeks than you can count? Well, it’s causing your fuel economy to drop! Storing unnecessary items in your car, especially heavy ones, cause more gas to be burned when driving. Ditch the unnecessary poundage and watch your fuel economy rise.

Watch Your Speed

Did you know that how you drive can actually affect your fuel economy? Aggressive driving -speeding, rapid acceleration and braking - burns more gas. Depending on the car you drive, speeds above 50 mph typically cause gas mileage to rapidly decrease. So what your speed and reap the benefits.

Hot and Cold

You know how your body is affected by the temperature outside? Well, the same is true for your car. Depending on whether it is hot or cold affects a car’s fuel economy. Fuel economy increases in hot weather, while in cold weather it decreases. Here are some ways to beat the weather’s effect on fuel.

Hot:

  • Don’t use the AC more than needed.
  • Don’t set the AC’s temperature lower than necessary.
  • Park in the shade to decrease the heat inside the cabin - less fuel will be burned because less AC usage will be required.

Cold:

  • Minimize idling your car to warm it up. Engines warm up faster being driven than they do standing still.
  • Park your car in a warmer location, like a garage, in order to keep the initial temperature of the engine and cabin warmer.

Toyota Corolla

The 2015 Toyota Corolla is an ultimate choice for anyone looking for reliability, generous equipment, good fuel economy, and an enjoyable ride. While the Corolla got a full redesign just last year, 2015 did bring a few new tidbits, like a fold-down rear center armrest on most trims and a Driver Convenience package that’s standard on all Premium sub-trims.

The 2015 Toyota Corolla is a five-passenger, compact sedan. It comes in four great trims, all offered in Plus and Premium sub-trims. Continue reading to find out the perks of each.

The L model is the base-level of the 2015 Corolla. It comes with LED headlights, running lights, power accessories, and height-adjustable driver seat. It also includes, Bluetooth phone connectivity and four-speaker sound system with CD player, USB/iPod interface, and auxiliary audio jack.

The LE model rides on 16-inch wheels, has heated mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, and keyless entry. It also has automatic climate control and cruise control for easy driving. The LE comes with a standard rearview camera, has a six-speaker sound system, and six-inch touchscreen display. It also has Bluetooth audio connectivity, phonebook capability, and voice controls.

The LE plus includes all of the features found on the LE, but has many great extras worth mentioning. It comes with foglights, piano-black interior accents, and is eligible for the optional sunroof and Driver Convenience package that consists of features like a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, roof-mounted antenna, satellite and HD radio, and navigation system Entune App suite mobile integration.

The LE Premium model offers everything found on the LE Plus, with extras like power driver seat, heated front seats, and premium vinyl upholstery.

If you’re looking for the most environmentally friendly of the Corolla’s, opt for the LE Eco. This model has an efficiency-maximizing engine and transmission tuning, as well as an Eco driving mode. It also has enhanced aerodynamics, foglights, chrome window trim, sport instrumentation, and trip computer.

For a zippier ride, try the S Plus. This model drives on 17-inch alloy wheels, has firmer suspension tuning and rear disc brakes. It also has the option of adding the sunroof and Driver Convenience package with six-speed transmission.

Like all of the S Plus’ equipment, but want a bit more? The S Premium is a good choice, adding things like premium vinyl upholstery for a more upscale vibe.

Many consider the Corolla to be a car that lacks interior appeal. But designers were given free reign with the 2015 edition - and it shows. The dash is stylish, the steering wheel has attractive sport contouring, and the asymmetrical shifter is eye-catching. In true Corolla fashion, easy use is still a priority, which shows with the design and layout of all buttons and knobs and the audio interface. It may not be a BMW, but seats provide plenty of comfort and rear legroom is great, even for tall passengers due to a 3.9-inch-longer wheel base than previous models.
